What are electrical protection classes?
Electrical equipment such as lamps are classified into different protection classes according to their protection against excessive voltage when touched directly. This classification is done according to EN 61140 (formerly DIN VDE 0140) and CENELEC HD 366.
Here are the three main classes:
Protection class I: Here the protection objective is achieved by insulation of live parts. This means that the lamps are designed to prevent direct contact with live parts.
Protection class II: In this class, the lamps are additionally equipped with reinforced insulation. They offer increased protection against electric shock.
Protection class III: This class includes lamps with safety extra-low voltage (SELV). Here the safety is ensured by a low voltage of maximum 50 V alternating current or 120 V direct current.
